MDocR-2505 Document Tray Reader MDocR-2505 Document Tray Reader
Assignment: Looking to leverage its proprietary RFID Stack Tag technology, Australian-based Magellan Technology needed a manufacturer for its new ‘smart’ document tray reader concept, the MDocR-2505. Magellan turned to Quickparts ensuring prototyping to production would be done with a single source.
Process: Utilizing Stratasys’ latest FDM Titan machines, Quickparts provided Magellan Tech with durable prototypes of the MDocR-2505 in a variety of colors for fit and function testing. All parts were shipped via FedEx International Priority to ensure safe shipping conditions and earliest arrival.
As the design was finalized through multiple iterations, Quickparts built production-quality display models through the Cast Urethane/RTV mold process to allow Magellan to demonstrate the electronic document management solution at International tradeshows.
“ While I initially looked to Quickparts because of their ability to provide instant quotes and be a single source for multiple manufacturing processes, what really makes it easier for me is my Quickparts team keeps me aware of important steps in the process and is always just a phone call or email away,” said Heinz Zollinger of Magellan Technology.
Accomplishment: In June 2004, Magellan launched the MDocR-2505 reader to an overwhelming response. Based upon customer feedback, the company is currently expanding its product line to include a heavy duty stackable version and an executive lite version.

MAC Equipment
Industry: Mineral
Project:
Spheri Valve® Models
Overview:

MAC is a global manufacturing company focused on improving the efficiency and productivity of the processing industry.  Specializing in pneumatic conveying and air filtration systems, MAC has been advancing the state-of-the-art for 40 years and is now the largest North American pneumatic conveying and filtration equipment supplier.

MAC Equipment provides a material handling valve, the Spheri Valve®, which has the ability to cut through static or moving columns of material through the use of its innovative inflatable seal mechanism.  This seal ensures that a consistent pressure tight seal is created when the valve is in the closed position, as well as providing an unrestricted flow when open.

Challenge:

MAC was looking for a lightweight model for their Spheri Valve®, a 75 lb. heavy-duty valve that is manufactured from cast iron.  MAC had some critical small features and post-assembly requirements for their model that made it a challenge to source through their current supply chain and other prototype manufacturers.  The Spheri Valves® also needed to be color-matched according to the MAC Equipment branding guidelines.

“We weren’t sure what process we needed for this project,” said Francis Beiring, Design Engineer.  “Quickparts put us on the right course by using their expertise to determine the best solution for our needs when others were unable to help.”

Solution: Quickparts extensive product offering and process knowledge helped MAC Equipment determine the solution that best fit their needs.  The cast urethane process gave Quickparts the ability to meet detailed critical feature requirements, satisfy post processing and assembly needs, and color-match the parts to specific MAC colors.
“The results are amazing,” said Francis.  “We were able to get highly detailed models of the valves at a fraction of the weight.  We took a 75 lb. part down to a 9 lb. model and we didn’t have to sacrifice on any of the small features.”
Benefits: Unsure of what solution would meet their needs, MAC turned to the experts in rapid prototyping at Quickparts for guidance on the best process to meet their needs.  Quickparts high attention to detail ensured that the project went smoothly.
“I was very impressed because you called me constantly and kept me in the loop the whole time,” said Francis.  “Quickparts’ attention to detail made this project a huge success!”

Dometic Sanitation Corporation
Industry: Marine and Recreational Vehicle
Project:
Nozzle for Newest Portable Toilet
Overview:

Dometic Sanitation Corporation designs and manufactures onboard sanitation systems and related equipment that exceed boat builder and end user expectations while protecting the marine environment.

Dometic began developing specialized systems in 1960 when the company was a division of residential bath fixture manufacturer Mansfield Sanitary, Inc. Dometic has worked closely with many boat manufacturers – engineering sanitation systems that meet a wide range of manufacturing and customer needs.

Dometic Sanitation Corporation markets SeaLand® and VacuFlush® marine and recreational vehicle sanitation systems.

Dometic as a whole is a custom-driven, world-leading provider of innovative leisure products for the caravan, motor home and marine markets. Dometic offers a complete range of air conditioners, refrigerators, awnings, cookers, sanitation systems, lighting, windows, doors, and other equipment that makes leisure life more comfortable away from home.

Challenge:

Faced with a large production project and a looming time line, Dometic Sanitation Corporation realized preliminary work was lacking from the previous designs of a critical flushing nozzle on their newest portable toilet system.

The new design would have to pass numerous tests, proving that the new part would not interfere with production.

“I had used Quickparts in the past and knew they would be the right company for what I needed,” said Mark Ezzo. “I knew that they would be able to meet my tight deadline and deliver quality parts in a short time.”

Solution: Dometic worked closely with Quickparts engineers to finalize design iterations, settling upon the final prototype. By placing numerous SLA orders and receiving them in days, they were able to confirm the new design by performing fit and form testing.
“After the fit and form testing we were able to create functional and cosmetic Cast Urethane prototype parts which we can then test in a real environment,” said Mark. “The guess work was gone since the prototypes so closely mimicked the production material of the part.”
Benefits: By taking advantage of Quickparts’ QuickQuote technology, Dometic was able to obtain instant online quotes in minutes. Utilizing the Next-Day SLA option, Quickparts drastically reduced the lead time.
“I am really happy with the results that Quickparts produces time and time again,” said Mark. “They produce quality parts in a timely manner with rewarding customer service.”

Hammerhead Design & Development
Industry: Medical
Project:
Medical Device Trays
Overview:

Hammerhead Design was formed in 1997 to offer consultative design engineering to physicians, medical personnel and medical device companies. Hammerhead Design focuses on engineering, education and consultation. As engineers they can assist you with your design by helping you protect it and by designing the first prototype. Hammerhead can locate the right person in the corporate structure to champion your concept through the evaluation process.

In education, Hammerhead can plan and manage the largest to the smallest hands-on training sessions. They can build anatomical models to teach a particular disease treatment, such as tumors or bleeders sewn into the porcine anatomy. Hammerhead can also help to design an ex-vivo model to assist in device development and testing. Whatever the need, they can simply get it done for you.

Challenge:

Hammerhead designed a medical device (explant tray) that would house and secure the anatomical models used to teach fellowship doctors about particular disease treatment. They needed a supplier that would not only communicate throughout the entire production process, but would also provide a one-stop-shop for SLA’s and Cast Urethanes.

“I needed a tray that would stabilize the organs used in testing,” said Becky. “I also needed to be able to paint the prototypes to match the color of the parts that would go in conjunction with the trays.”

Solution: Quickparts provided the single source solution for all of Hammerhead’s production needs with their patent pending QuickQuote® technology. After confirming the design of the trays with painted SLA parts, Hammerhead decided upon the Cast Urethane process for the production of the trays.
“By using Quickparts QuickQuote process I was able to save time,” said Becky. “The quotes are easy to modify and they always adapt to any changes I need to make.”
Benefits: Having been a loyal customer of Quickparts since 2000, Hammerhead and Becky Delegge felt confident using them for prototype and pre-production parts.  When choosing a vendor, communication was key for Hammerhead and Quickparts always delivered.
“By teaming with Quickparts, Hammerhead has been able to change the paradigm of medical education,” said Becky. “I have found Quickparts to be an asset to my business.”

Sentinelle Medical’s ongoing collaboration with academic institutions ensures Sentinelle technology is at the leading edge of the field of breast MRI imaging advances.

Clinical experience in diagnostic imaging produced compelling ideas for improvement in breast lesion detection and intervention efficiency. Thus, the Sentinelle Vanguard Breast MR Auxiliary Table™ was created.

The Vanguard system, along with their proprietary software Aegis with BRIGHT™, provides an unprecedented combination of image quality, interventional capabilities, biopsy choices, patient ergonomics, clinical convenience, and health care economics.

Commercial development of this and other diagnostic imaging applications are the ongoing pursuit of Sentinelle, which in turn funds ongoing research in MRI technology.

Challenge:

The Sentinelle Vanguard Breast MR Auxiliary Table™ with eight channel coil array transforms your GE MRI into a dedicated system for Breast MR imaging and intervention. The Variable Coil Geometry™ of the eight channel array allows the position of the coils to be customized for every patient. The coils can be moved medially and laterally, as well as posteriorally towards the axilla and chest wall providing improvements to image quality unavailable on traditional tabletop coils.

While searching for a supplier who could produce housing for their Vanguard™ coils, Sentinelle knew the project would require a quick turn around time and an inexpensive alternative to CNC Machining the parts.

Solution: Sentinelle turned to Quickparts after hearing about the QuickQuote software and the ability to receive an instant online quote for Cast Urethane and Rapid Prototype parts. By being able to receive prototype parts in days and Urethane parts in weeks, Sentinelle was able to stick to their production schedule.

Quickparts also sourced the new material that Sentinelle Medical used for the housing of the Vanguard™ coils.

“In two weeks we received cast urethane parts in hand,” said Rob Brown. “Saving us the added cost of using CNC Machined parts we made the right decision choosing Quickparts and the Cast Urethane process.”

Benefits: “Quickparts is not only responsive, but provide incomparable convenience with their instant quote process,” said Brown. “I can submit a file and look at different process options. The QuickQuote process also allows me the ability to see part pricing before the part design is totally complete. I like receiving that quote right away.”
